Tour overview:

Depart Nelson 8.30 am and travel over the productive Waimea Plains, through the historic Upper Moutere and up Takaka Hill. The first short walk is through ancient granite and marble rock outcrops and into a quaint forest remnant for a spectacular view back towards Nelson.

There are options to be guided through Ngarua Cave (Middle Earth) and exit on to a Hobbit film site.
The drive continues over an altitude of 791 metres for views of Fisherman Island and Abel Tasman National Park, Kahurangi National Park and Golden Bay.

The taonga, Te Waikoropupu Springs are the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand, the largest cold water springs in the southern hemisphere and is the clearest water ever measured in the world. This small area surrounding the springs is wahi tapu, a place held in high cultural and spiritual regard, is steeped in gold mining history and is the perfect place to observe the many stages of re-vegetation of a unique indigenous forest that contains a huge collection of plants including mature beech and podocarp trees and plants found nowhere else.

Towards the eastern side of Golden Bay the road passes through a natural hole and along side amazing limestone formations to the Abel Tasman memorial lookout which is significant to Maori and the Dutch as well as New Zealand as a whole.

View the Golden sands of Ligar Bay then feast on a gourmet lunch on Tata Beach before overlooking a mussel farm, Wainui Bay and Abel Tasman National Park.

The final short walk of the day is virtually into a hidden secret. A fascinating limestone area shaped and worn by strong undersea currents before being thrust up from the ocean into a sub-tropical climate that supports a unique collection of plants, some with strange habits and incredible stories.

"Very informative brilliant day, friendly guide, loved it. Had loads of fun too!"
